One of the most important steps in the hiring process is to check employment references. Former board members and supervisors should be used as references. Checking references takes time, but it allows the board to verify information such as employment dates, salary and types of job duties and responsibilities. The board can also ask about job performance, work ethic, attitude and other criteria that are important to the association. A list of job related questions can be developed for the reference checks. The questions can be targeted to the specific needs of the association. A written questionnaire form should be used to document the reference check.
